SALIENT POINTS OF THE PETROLEUM ACT 1934 & THE PETROLEUM RULES 1976

Class A Class B Class C
Flash Point less than 23°C

Flash point 23°C or above but less than 65°C

Flash point 65°C or above

Licence not required if stored quantity less than 30 liters 

Licence not required if stored quantity less than 2500 lts.

Licence not required if stored quantity is less than 45000 lts.

For quantity between 30 lts. and 300 lts. licence has to be obtained from District Authority

For quantity between 2500 lts. - 25000 lts. licence has to be obtained from District Authority.
For quantity above 25000 lts. the licensing authority is the Chief Controller.

 

The storage shed should be as per the Petroleum Rules rules 1976

There should be open space all around the shed as follows:
Storage upto 2500 lts. - 6 mts.
Storage upto 25000 lts. - 7.5 mts

There is no requirement of open space around the storage shed for storage upto 25000 lts.

There is no requirement of open space around the storage shed upto 45000 lts.

Refinery products Toluene, Benzene, Hexane.

 

Mineral Turpentine Ortho Xylene, Mix Xylenem (if it does not have ethyl benzene check manufacturers specification)
